maritimes 1

another update

one brief social comment on Quebec - as a redneck Albertan it is a little annoying to have to have everything in 2 official languages eventhough I can probably count on one hand the # of Albertans who speak/read French but don't speak/read French. then I get to Quebec and there is no English on the signs. We generally understand the meaning but in particular when they are warning me of something (ATTENTIONEMENT!) it would be nice to know what the hell they are talking about. That said, everyone we met was pretty nice. I always tried to speak to them in French, they always smiled at me like I was an idiot and replied in English.

Anyway, we are now in the Maritimes. The scenery, campgrounds and food are amazing. We are going through relatively quickly, plan is to spend more time here on our return way through.

First stop in New Brunswick was at Charlo. Nice campground just over the St. Lawrence. We went for a bike ride and found a great trail that was recently opened between a number of towns. Really nice.

Next day was a slow drive down the cost, went out to Miscou Island and then on to a campground just outside Miramichi. Driving is a lot different here than in NW Ontario. There is a new little community around pretty much every corner, and each seems kind of unique and interesting. Instead of elevators (like Saskatchewan), every town has a Catholic church. The Quebecois must be better Catholics than the Maritimers because their churches looked nicer.

Anyway, when I went to pay the campground guy at Miramichi, he had just sat down for a beer. Said my timing was great as he now had enough money for another dozen.

Next day we continued down the northeast end of NB. Stopped at Kouchibouguac National Park for a 2 hour bike ride. Neat place with one of the few Canadian "keys" - some small islands that protect a saltwater lagoon.

Made our way to Moncton, where we "camped" at Walmart. All Walmarts in North Amercia allow overnight camping and we have been using almost every 2nd night. Price is good (free) and it also allows us to stay in a city, as most campgrounds are generally out of town. There are always a few campers in the parking lot with us.

Another leisurely driving/touring day and we were in Nova Scotia (another province down - that is 8 if anyone other than me is counting). Camped at an amazing provincial campground just outside Pictou, our site backed onto a cliff from which there was a walkway down to the beach. Across the water we could see PEI. Pictures are above but probably don't do it justice.

next day was more driving/touring. Stopped in Pictou, where the first Scots landed/settled in North America. They had a museum there but I doubt it does well as there isn't a Scotchman in the world who would pay $7 to see a wee bit of old Scottich crap. the streetlights in Pictou each have a tartan on them, saw the Hay, Macleod, etc...

on the food front, we have done fish and chips (halibut and haddock), mussels (twice, we prepared), seafood chowder, salmon (BBQ with maple syrup) and a lobster dinner out (the Green House in Shediac, NS - fantastic!). Tonite we are cooking fresh scallops with recipe from an Atlantic Seafood cookbook we bought. Have not been able to find Cheech'N'Chong crab anywhere though.

and now we are in Baddeck, NS. it is the long weekend so we were advised to actually plan and reserve campsites so we are here for 2 nights, then to the Sydney Walmart prior to boarding the ferry for Newfoundland Monday morning. Baddeck is in the middle of Cape Breton and we will tour from here the next 2 days and see what we can find.

All continues to go well except Aneeda/Monique is not reacting well to the east coast bugs, and the bites are swollen and itchy. She read somewhere that a meat tenderizer mixed with water rub will help the itching so she is trying that. Says it is helping and she smells delicious.

By the way, today marks 5 weeks since we left - the time is flying.

Miss you all and hope all goes well!

quebec

quebec is now behind us. it was a quick trip through, a couploe of nights in and near Montreal, a couple of nights in and near Quebec City and then we drove on to New Brunswick.

Montreal was OK, did a lot of walking and some nice stuff but was a little disapointing.

Quebec was great - did a lot of walking, saw a lot of great stuff and would love to go back again.

the big thing to do in both cities seemed to be wander around old neighbourhoods, eat and drink. worked for us. pictures above are both Quebec. one is outside a classy little restaurant that served a 3 course gourmet lunch with a glass of wine for $15.00. the other was a great streetside cafe that actually sold beer by the half yard! it was hard to believe.
we are in New Brunswick now - will update and attach pictures soon. appreciate the comments back from people, it is nice to know you are reading.
having a great time and miss you all!!!

ontario

a few catch up things I missed. Dinner the last night in Winnipeg was great - met with Rhea and Henry again as well as Signy & Grant and surprise! got to see Richard and Caroline who live in Bermuda and were in town for a visit. After great wine and dinner (Winnipeg has great restaurants) were standing on the corner and bumped into Bryan, another old friend. Great to see him and catch up. Richard or Rhea - pls e-mail pics if you have a chance.

also, regarding the picture of Monique on the bridge, I have included a pic of the 2 bridges here to give you a sense of where she was.

also, G-Spot - wanted to let you know that since Aneeda did not have Hot Sex with you, she was able to have it with me a few evenings by the campfire and a couple of mornings with our coffee!

so, when last updated we were in a bar in Sudbury. camped overnite outside Sudbury and then on to wine country after a run in Parry Sound (gorgeous) and a painfully slow drive on the QEW from Toronto to Hamilton. Went for a bike ride Thursday a.m. and stumbled upon a winery (Cave Springs), museum and small town not far from campground. from there hopped in the van and toured wineries - Monique tasted and Randy drove. and then to see Niagara Falls and all the tacky tourist attractions around the town.

during the day arranged to meet Andrew and Lisa (friends recently moved to Oakville from Wpg) Saturday. But then Andrew phoned and offered us Buffalo Bills tickets for Friday. To which Monique asked "who are the Buffalo Bills?"

so friday went to Oakville, found their house, picked up tix and went to Buffalo! a quick stop at the New York county fair (2nd biggest in the country but pretty much just like every other fair you have ever been to..) and then to the game. arrived a couple hours prior to tailgate - met some great people and had a great time. they even guided us out of the parking lot and back to the border after a post game beer!

Saturday a couple more wineries (Monique drove, Randy tasted) and our 12 bottle budget somehow climbed to 16. and then to visit Andrew, Lisa, Hayley, Sydney and Martha for a great dinner - thx.

Sunday to Brighton to visit Monique's cousin Paul and Rhonda. nice place in the country and got to sleep in a real bed and have a real shower!

Monday to Ottawa. After initial parking/driving issues we had a great time touring, mostly on Tuesday. A lot of it on bikes as the trail system is great. Toured the National Gallery of Canada (Renoir landscapes were great, the modern art is beyond our understanding) and Parliament Building and saw the evening Sound and Light show where they project right on the buildings. A little hokie but kind of neat.

that's it for now - first night in Quebec tonite. Hope everyone is doing great - miss you all.
Randy & Monique

why we like Saskatchewan better than Northern Ontario - 1. SK has Pilsner, NOnt has Blue Light 2. Not much to see in SK but you can see lots of it. In NOnt only walls of trees and odd lake. 3. Driving speed. In SK follow other Albertans speeding through at 140km, try to avoid potholes and out in 8 hours. NOnt goes on for days. 4. Flat. All hills in NOnt. Motorhome doesn't have enough power to speed up them and drivers are too cowardly to speed down them. 5. Pilsner. 6. Road construction. They do it in NOnt and you have to slow down. SK justs leaves the potholes.

we are actually having a great time and seeing sights. first stop was Rushing River by Kenora, then Kakebeka Falls (above) by Thunder Bay. Terry Fox memorial also above. Next day we stoped at "Canada's longest suspension bridge". Doesn't Monique look like she is having fun?

also ended up at a park called Neys. just expected a place to sleep but found a great beach!

anyway, it is now Tuesday afternoon. We are in Sudbury and I am in a sports bar with wireless internet enjoying a non-Pilsner beer. Life is grand - hope everyone else is doing well!

Home and friends

been a while since our last update. there has been much visiting of friends and family. Spent a few days in Winnipeg with Monique's Mom & sister. Wednesday lunch was at the DairiWhip. Still has the same staff and the burgers are still the best to be found. Went Wednesday night to see Big Dave McLean at the Windsor but sadly the website (which told us he plays every Wednesday) was out of date. Apparently his summer is spent at the cottage and playing the blues at festivals. Got to spend some time with Cheryl, Rhea and Henry though which was great. Thursday went to Portage and Randy's Mom took us and the family out to dinner. Golfed in Southport with Monique's Dad on Friday and then to Miller's campground to see Noel & Trish. Saturday night at Darryl and Kathee's for steak and beer. Best man from our wedding (Frank) was also there.

Sunday was at Monique's Dads and saw her brother Dave and met Darla, our new sister-in-law.

Monday went to Clear Lake. Beautiful course but it rained all day.

Tuesday/Wednesday was the men's only WGZ Invitational at Falcon Lake (just like the TV show). Great courses, great company and mediocre golf. Had a great time. Monique went to Gimli with family and strolled the beach.

travel

Sunday and Monday were travel days. Stopped in Outlook, SK to walk across the "longest pedestrian bridge in Canada". it is on an abandoned rail crossing with a great view of the Sask river valley.
did an overnight by Regina and then on to Winnipeg, where we ran with the Winnipeg Hash House on Monday night. We are almost getting used to running in 35 degree heat! of interest is that since there are no hills to climb they actually do step exercises during the run?!? Hospitality was great, had a lot of fun.
Tuesday was a relax day, a few beers and lunch at the Forks. Humidex was 44 so a little warm for doing much outdoors.
